The 2013 IEEE Conference on High Performance Switching and Routing (HPSR) was held this year in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, ROC, between 8th and 11th July, 2013. Taipei is one of the most prominent political, economic, and cultural centers in Southeast Asia.
It was my surprise to find out that many of the well-known technology companies were founded in this country. An example of Taiwanese accomplished tech companies are: Acer, Apacer, Asus, BenQ, D-Link, HTC, Silicon Power, and the iPhone manufacturer HonHai/Foxconn.
The focus of HPSR 2013 was indeed a great fit for the country’s industry mix which is quite heavily involved in technology: high-speed, energy efficient, and high-quality data transmissions, switching, and routing for wired and wireless networks. The visual below summarises quite well what has been talked about in HPSR 2013. Clearly the conference focus remains well anchored in its original research scope, which is packet networks switching and routing. However, as highlighted below some emerging research topics have received a fair bit of attention during the conference.
HPSR 2013 featured: three invited tutorial talks on hot topics presented by leading experts, eight technical sessions, a poster session, and a panel session. Out of the three tutorials, two of them focussed on software defined networking (SDN), which is the new hype in the area of networking. It seems that many researchers and practitioners are focusing on and pushing forward this domain nowadays. SDN even received the limelight in one of the conference keynote addresses. Even the panel discussion, entitled “Directions and Challenges of Software-Defined Networking” was dedicated to this hot topic albeit with a more practical, down-to-earth focus. It seems that SDN is still in its early days and many issues need to be addressed before bringing it to maturity. More information on this technology can be found here.
The conference assigned two technical session for the best papers submitted by students and non-students. The paper that won the best student paper award was entitled “TCAM-based High Speed Longest Prefix Matching with Fast Incremental Table Updates” from Technical University of Denmark. The paper tackles the problem of processing speed for IP look-ups inside core routers. Compared to previous works in the area that mostly focused on increasing the processing speed of IP routers, this work considers the very physical hardware architecture of the routers to achieve even higher throughputs.
The other technical sessions focused on a large range of topics such as: traffic engineering and load-balancing, internet routing, network monitoring and management and optical networks. These research areas have traditionally been the bread-and-butter of HPSR conference series. have been
One of the papers that focused on WMNs and their capacity, which is within the scope of CARMESH, is entitled “Mesh Router Selection to Maximize System throughput in Dense Wireless Mesh Networks” from Japanese authors. The paper takes the case of dense networks and aims at identifying a set of mesh nodes that can be removed in order to avoid unnecessary interference. The end goal here is improving the overall network performance.
Overall, it was a very good conference, very well organized, with interesting subjects and numerous researchers to discuss with. Beside people from China, many researchers from USA and a few from Europe attended the conference.
Even though most of the conference papers were presented by researchers from academia, it was good to see a fair involvement from industry such as Bell Laboratories,Cisco, IBM from USA or KDDI R&D Laboratories. This decreased a bit the gap between academia and industry and their presentations gave an insight of what the industry research interests are in the field.
